Boating May Help Boost Health and Wellness

Dan Madrigal is a real estate professional from Wichita, Kansas. Away from his work, Dan Madrigal pursues his love of boating.

Scientific investigations have found that boating, in addition to giving happiness and relaxation, benefits boaters’ health. Marine biologist Dr. Wallace Nichols, who authored the book “Blue Mind,” studied the scientific connection between boating and health.

Dr. Nichols said that a stressed person has a “red mind,” which shows symptoms of anxiety and fear. A “blue mind” shows calmness, peace, and a sense of happiness generally associated with water. In his study, Dr. Nichols concluded that boating allows a person to explore the benefits of a blue mind, which includes meditation, inspiration, and creativity.

People who go boating may also improve their lung health. A study by The Lung Institute has concluded that the ocean breeze helps clear the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis. This study supports earlier studies that say the ocean breeze helps thin mucus, decrease sinus pressure, reduce coughing, and improve overall lung function.
